Greetings,
My computer makes no sound. The machine is amd64-based and has a VIA
8237/KM800 asic. I have compiled it for 64-bit cblfs Linux and
kernel 2.6.28.10. I enabled alsa directly in the kernel and the via
driver also .
I installed alsa 1.018 (library, plugin and tools (I had forgotton the
utilities) which I installed only when I came to use the sound and
discovered it absense.. I ran alsaconf and it reports no sound
card as does alsactl when the machine is shutting down. However in
KDE421 (control centre) under sound I get the following lines:-
##############
Soundcard
SoundDriver 3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v 1.0.18rc3 emulation code)
Linux kernel blabla # 1 SMP date+time x86_64
Config Options:0
Installed DFrivers
Type 10: ALSA emulation
Card config:

Audio devices

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

QUESTIONS:
1) What do the above mean? I compiled the kernel as:-
(*)Sound Card Support -enabled
(*)ALSA --enabled
(*)generic sound devices -enabled
()virtual midi soundcard -disabled
(this is the only reference I saw of midi and none of synth)
(*) PCI-dound-devices
(*) VIA 82C686A/B, 8233/8235 AC97 controller --enabled
(There is no reference in kernel 2.6.28.10 specifically to via 8237. Could
this be the source of the problem?
2) OR is there a problem of ALSA-1.018 emulating via8237 for 64-bit
builds? (As you can see I was using an early version of this program)?
3) OR is it wise to upgade to alsa-1.0.20 and if so does this merely
installs over the old version of alsa or is a prior-cleanout necessary?
4) Could my erratic install sequence cause a symlink to be mising and if so
what is this link?
suggestions and reports of any 64bit clfs builds with via8237 and alsa
working would be gratefully received.
yours sincerely
