I recompiled the kernel keeping drivers for all PCI-devices as modules and running alsaconf now reports the presence of via8237 and configures it as 'a sound card'. I can also run #alsamixer card1 and adjust volumes. and on shutdown /sbin/alsactl does not report ''no sound cards found" but instead report "....saving volumes'.
