Curiously I did not have /usr/bin/aplay. I had used the blfs recipe
configure, make, make install to build/install it. I had to re-compile
alsa-1.0.18 with PKG_CONFIG_PATH specified and other options such as
alsa-prefix. Now I have /usr/bin/aplay.

I tried /usr/bin/aplay /usr/share/sounds/Noise.wav
(and other sounds in the /usr/share/sounds directory) and even some
in /opt/kde4/share/sounds directory ALL to no avail. I just get a ' pop'.
The alsamixer levels are all 'up'. In kde kmix and other audio
applications still refuse to budge.

suggestions welcomed
