Thanks a lot Guy and Dominic for your quick answers.

I used one other  'fast' DNS server (OpenDNS)  and decreased the resolution
latency by more
than a magnitude.  I do confirm that cURL is necessary for Flash 10 to run
correctly. Concerning the
annoying messages  raised by the gdk, i feel more relaxed now. I tried a
more recent version of gtk+
gtk+-2.17.6 but did not see any substantial change  (owing to what i have
read from
Dominic's post,  this bug has been first reported as fixed but is still
persistent, undecided
and/or unsolved) . For now, I will simply redirect  firefox stderr to
/dev/null.
