Be happy ! I spent quite a week, until I solved all my issues. Some extracts
from the web:

ArchLinux, Oct. 2009:
FS#15998 - [cups] 1.4-1 - USB printers do not work + Print Processs Hangs
In the cups 1.4-1 package there are two issues:
1) USB printers are not detected by default
2) You can only print one job, before the USB process hangs

Ubuntu-Bugs, Aug. 2009
usblp Kernel module needs to be removed and /dev/bus/usb/*/* made accessible
for USB printers to work with CUPS 1.4.x

ArchLinux,Jan. 2010
I'll sum up what worked for me to perhaps make it a little easier for future
printer-fighters. I skirmished an Epson Stylus SX100.
- installing cups, hal-cups-utils, ghostscript, gsfonts and gutenprint,
- adding cups to rc.d,
- blacklisting usblp
- adding a rule for udev

It seems, according to the comments, that not all issues have been solved up to
now. Also, not everyone is affected in similar way. But one thing seems to be
always necessary: to disable usblp.

Nevertheless: I am not the expert, I just wanted to point to a possible
"headache"
