 I'm with Andrew on this - works ok for me.  I put 1.4.3 on my new system
this week, and came upon those references while I was trying to find what
had happened to the "print test page" option - (click on the _queue_ under
'printers', then it's on the 'maintenance' tab.  You can see my scripts in
what I posted the other day - using /dev/usb/lp0, udev-151, 2.6.32.12,
and usblp.o is compiled into my kernel.

 Undoubtedly there is some sort of problem here, but many are not
affected.  Perhaps it's an old udev/rules, or perhaps its only when built
as a module, or even only on old kernels.
