 In connection with the misapprehension about the 'RELEASE' file,
not every system uses modules!  But more relevantly (I recently
managed to boot an existing system when I thought I was booting the
new one, and only noticed when my buildscript told me that I'd
already built the next packages) you may need to fix one of the
following in grub.cfg (once you have identified which entry is
supposed to relate to the *new* system) -

 The title of the entry

 perhaps, the set root line (I use a separate /boot partition, so
this is common to all my systems, but might vary in other
situations), similarly the uuid

 (any echo of which system is being loaded - grub-1.98 added this
for me, 1.97 didn't)

 in the 'linux' line, the name of the vmlinuz file AND/OR the root=
