LFS 6.22

My motherboard apparently has a bad serial port: (physical multimeter
tests show no voltage when writing to the port)

xxxx@cname:~$ dmesg | grep serial
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
Couldn't register serial port COMB: -28

Therefore I bought a couple of Trendnet USB to Serial Converters

I've compiled General USB to Serial into the kernal as a module:

# USB Serial Converter support
CONFIG_USB_SERIAL=m
CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_GENERIC=y

However, when I reboot I don't get udev to give me a USB device like I
am expecting.

Some documentation on BLFS refers you to the Wiki for USB devices, but
that page is blank.

can someone point me in the correct direction here?

Thank you
Alan
