 With luck, Armin has already pointed to what you need to do (if
not, I'm in the dark about wireless - I've only got it on my
netbook, and that is still only running ubuntu).  The important
lesson, in my opinion, is to build the system one step at a time.

 Here, getting connectivity is important.  After that, try to make
the system minimally usable - I think you were asking about using
different desktops and different window managers (apologies if I've
mixed you up with someone else) : gnome-3 works fine for those who
like that sort of thing, but it needs many packages to be built
before it is usable.  If you can do 80% of what you wish to do using
a "lesser" desktop environment with not very many dependencies, that
might be a better place to go, before you start building gnome.
