 I think its main purpose is to provide usable libraries whatever
the *platform* (related to all those tests in configure, for old
OS's we've otherwise forgotten about, and for the still-current
non-linux OS's such as the BSDs.  ISTR that the *how* of linking
varies greatly, but that libtool should just be able to do it.

 On linux, of course, creating libraries is simples and that is why
libtool looks like an unnecessary overhead to many people.
