I got it working. Thanks for everyone's help.
It's still buggy. I think the problem is this USB wireless device. It
was probably working in the last post, but just so slow that I though
it was not working. I'll try another wireless device. But I've got the
process working, so using a better wireless device should work well.
Wireless is working great! now that I moved the BLFS system out of
VirtualBox and into a real laptop.
What's the best way to request a preferred local ip address with option
to use other ip address?
I'm connecting to the laptop via ssh, and so having the same or close to
the same local ip address would make it easier.
The laptop will be used on different wireless networks where it will be
a first come first serve, for available ip addresses.
The only way that I know to do what you want is to use dhcp and set up
the dhcp server on your local net to tie your laptop's mac address to a
fixed ip address. Even this may be tricky if your local access point
has a password and needs wpa and the other networks do not use wpa.
You may want to look at wicd.
