If there are only two people commenting on an issue, then top posting is a matter of personal preference. On a mailing list, there are multiple posters to a thread and many times the comments are interleaved in the previous posters' comments.
I know gmail top posts be default, but a user can override that default by just putting the cursor at the bottom of the message.
It also helps to remove parts of a post that are not relevant to your comments.
