Solution: Open File /dev/sr0

xine will read the DVD as if it were any other file.

p.s. I created a brand new BLFS system with all the latest development
packages only with the 3.16.37 Linux kernel. VLC still has a memory leak.
Using xine to play the DVD as described above levels out at 3.9 GiB RAM
while playing the whole DVD.
