It seems we should always keep in mind that gnome is fragile in the sense that a problem early on (no PAM) can cause it to spiral down - and the final failure mode (segfault) can obscure the triggering misstep. Such later crashes are indeed bugs (even if triggered by the lack of something gnome needs).
