It looks that way. It seems we should always keep in mind that gnome
is fragile in the sense that a problem early on (no PAM) can cause it
to spiral down - and the final failure mode (segfault) can obscure
the triggering misstep. Such later crashes are indeed bugs (even if
triggered by the lack of something gnome needs).

Yes seen that.   That's what made me think that Pam, maybe, is a prerequisite 
for Gnome.



PAM is a prerequisite for completing systemd, systemd is a prerequisite for Gnome.
