In my own experience, you can upgrade binutils by itself without
any problem - it is *downgrading* that may cause a problem with
gcc, which might use a feature that requires a binutils of
a certain release or newer.

You might want to do a backup of all installed binutils programs,
scripts and libraries:
Installed programs: addr2line, ar, as, c++filt, elfedit, gprof, ld, ld.bfd,
ld.gold, nm, objcopy, objdump, ranlib, readelf, size,
strings, and strip
Installed libraries: libbfd.{a,so} and libopcodes.{a,so}
Installed directory: /usr/lib/ldscripts
before you install the new version of binutils.
