Excuse replying to myself, something I just remembered. Tex Live has a particularly useful utility called texdoc. Setting the following personal environment variables is highly recommended:
export PDFVIEWER="evince" PSVIEWER="evince" DVIVIEWER="evince" At least if evince is your browser of choice that is. I mention this because 99% of my students reach straight for the internet when they need help I won't give them. This I think is a concerning modern-day malady. I notice now the default installation does not build texdoctk (which allows mouse use but which I feel is less useful). I'll look into it as I see tk is not an optional dependency.
