Using the link in the 8.4 book I've just downloaded 5.1.6. The md5sum matches what is in that book, and tar -xvf followed by ls -l shows the Makefile has a size of 4283 bytes (and for me it shows a time of 14:26 because our timezones differ by 5 hours).
If you still have 5.1.6, please check the md5sum - if that is ok, maybe you filled up the filesystem where you were building it ? ĸen -- With a few red lights, a few old bits, we made the place to sweat.
