When I was testing the 8.4 sysv book I installed most of the parts of gnome which are in that book - now, every other time I make a download (from firefox) on that system, I have to double-check to ensure it will download, rather than "open with" (for some files, opening with the gimp seems to be a favourite). For some of us, Desktop Environments are best avoided. But I'm glad you found out where the problem was arising. Yet another thing to remember!
