Maybe this has been said earlier in the thread (sorry for asking again if so), but are you using the systemd or the elogind version of the book? I am not sure this kind of problems is completely ironed out in elogind... Another thing to check (but if you have an US keyboard, this is unlikely) is that the keyboard for the password window is what you think it is (there is an option to show it on the screen, I think).
