I do believe that the software receives instructions on what is installed on 
your computer, or in this case, laptop, not the other way around.

To cite an example, when ever you plug some kind of new hardware into the 
computer, you'll get the add hardware wizard launch right away.  This is 
because the software, will constantly check to see if the hardware 
configuration has changed on your computer.

I should also point out that the RAM status is done before boot up of the 
OS, and that detection of such hardware, is imbedded into the firmware of 
the computer itself, not the operating system.
