Hi Lisa, To check the status of the Windows firewall, go to the control panel, and select Windows Firewall, and hit enter. You said that you have DSL service, so if you have a network router, then you no doubt have a hardware firewall. Think of your security this way. A Firewall, prevents unauthorized access to your computer from the internet. Anti-virus software, depending on how it's configured, will detect possible viruses when downloading from the internet. Anti- Spyware, and anti-adware, , depending on the particular software and configuration, will detect malicious code being downloaded to your machine. Should these types of things make it to your machine, then your security software will allow you to detect and remove it. If someone wants on your machine bad enough, they can do it, but will always opt for the easiest target. So, it's best to keep your internet security running and up to date. As far as the external drive,if it has a power switch, then keep it turned off when not in use. That drive cannot be accessed, if it isn't turned on.
