Sarah, most accounts require that you send e-mails using your ISP's SMTP server to prevent forged e-mails. However, as GMail has a very good spam filter they wouldn't need to put this restriction in place. I know what you mean though, as with Fastmail I have to either use their SMTP server, which is only available for paid members anyway, or my ISP's SMTP server, to which I can't remember the address. (No, I don't need help on this, thanks.)
