I'd like to put my 2 cents in here Sharon, because I just went through this not long ago.
1. An external drive can be removed and placed into another PC , allowing all of the data to be accessible, even when your computer is down or not available. 2. External drives come in all sizes from relatively inexpensive 20 GB drives which cost about $30 up to and including Joseph's drive which probably runs into the hundreds of dollars. You can get one that fits your budget. 3. If you do run out of room, it's always possible to buy another drive unit. That option is practically unlimited except by the cost, of course. 4. The smaller jump drives or stick drives as they're sometimes called, have no moving parts and are relatively indistructible unless mishandled or subjected to strong magnetic fields. The larger drives such as the one Joseph mentioned, do have moving parts but they're relatively simple when compared to the complexity the average computer contains. 5. External drives are readily available from most stores which sell computer products. Ifr your system has a USB port, that's all you need. So, if you have a serious concern like Chris, you can go out and purchase a drive and back up your files to your heart's content. I hope this helps you.
