Dunno is MS works word processor can open just any version of a Word
document, but you should hopefully be able to find out by opening it, then
either accessing the File menu, and going down to enter on 'Open' - but just
the key combination of Ctrl + O should get you to the same file open
dialogue.

Anyway, by default, you'll be in the filename field/edit box, but if you tab
once to the files of type combo box, you should be able to arrow up an down
and get possible version info.

Alternatively, from the edit box, simply hit shift + tab to get to the file
list, then use the backspace key to move 'up' until you get to a list of
things like My Documents, My computer etc., hit enter on my computer, arrow
around until you find that specific disk drive, hit enter thereon, and
continue this until you find the file, and try open it by hitting enter on
it.

If it doesn't want to open, or is heavily corrupted, then you might just
need someone with the right/newish version of Word to in fact open the file,
and try resave it in a previous/simpler file version.
