Hi Patricia, Actually, the file I wrote was for installing an OEM, (original equipment manufacturer) hard drive inside the computer. Quite different from external drives. smile As far as what brand, well that is always open for debate, but I prefer Seagate, and Maxtor, and also have Western digital. These 3 are still big names in hard drive manufacturers, and Maxtor was acquired by Seagate sometime ago. For a USB, (external) hard drive, Windows should recognize it once it is plugged in to the port and turned on. When buying one, get one that requires a power supply, which should come with the drive. Also, look at the spindle speed, it should be at least 7200 rpm, which is pretty common place these days. Find the best deal you can, regarding storage capacity, and don't concern yourself with transfer rates, and cache size, as they will not be relevant to general computing tasks. Everything you need to connect the drive to the computer and start useing it should come with the computer, here's a checklist: 1 hard drive 2. power supply 3. USB cable 4. optional stand for vertical drive placement. Note: If you choose to place your drive in a vertical position, place it where it can't be knocked over. any impact to the case may ruin the drive, since the internal mechanics of the drive operate under very close tolerances. Does it matter what brand? *I use xp pro on HP machine 2. I had heard that just plugging this into a USB port that xp would automatically recognize the drive so nothing else was necessary to copy stored data to that device? Thanks for your help and the site you maintaine..
