Steve, MP3 and WMA are mainly a compression codec. WMA is primarily the Microsoft codec and MP3 is more widely accepted as a standard. If you already have your files in MP3, I would leave them there. You would have to recompress them to make them WMA, and that would degrade the quality.
I technically use MP3, 192kbps, 44.1 stereo for my files which is a lot better than 128kbps that you can get from iTunes. The new buy and download place to go is Amazon since they have DRM free MP3 files at 256kbps. Hope that helps!
