I would also agree that MP3 is what you should stay with. One thing I will say though is that with my zenstone, I tested various bitrates (all of them constant though) to see what sort of level would be acceptable since the sort of average rates for MP3 files are somewhere between 128kbps and 192kbps.
Playing with various rates, I found that as long as the files are encoded to 64kbps, they sound pretty good on the zenstone, and that obviously means I can fit more files on it's memory (currently have around 350 on my 1Gb zenstone).
