Well, I basically don't normally bother using that dialogue when I want to 
change sounds.

I just go to the c:\windows\media folder, rename the old files, and then 
rename the new ones to match the standard windows names, so it might be that 
something else did that automatically - maybe a windows repair installation 
might sort it out (and hopefully not break anything else)...?
