On your desktop machine , find My network places on the desktop, and either right-click on it and look for the properties item, or else, just hit alt + enter on it.
Then when the list of network connections comes up, find something like either local area network, or the name of a network card (hopefully won't be too many). When that is highlighted, hit alt + enter (properties) again. Alternatively, start menu, settings, control panel, network connections, and there find the relevant one, and if it comes up with it's status dialogue, find the properties button, and click on that (using the space bar). in the list of protocols, find Internet TCP/IP, then tab over to the properties button, and there you'll find the relevant properties which you should be able to replicate on your laptop.
