This HotSpot Shield must route all your encrypted network traffic from your
PC through its own server. This creates a major bottleneck and can't
possibly be close to all other web servers, since the web is worldwide!
This would be very effective if you didn't trust your ISP or some local
threat. Of course, once it passes through the HotSpot server, it is in
plain text and this could be the majority of its route. It certainly came
through my ISP in plain text.

Some web traffic is encrypted by design. Anytime you go to a secure site
(one where the URL starts with "https://";) it is encrypted from your PC all
the way to the final web server and back. This is used for all on line
ordering, bank sites and the majority of sites where you log in with a
password. I believe, even omen a nonsecure site the password itself is
encrypted. In my opinion, it would be nice if all traffic was encrypted.
Of course this would come at a cost of performance both on your
pc and on the server, since encryption and decryption takes up resources.

Even on encrypted traffic, the entire network packet is not encrypted. Only
the data is encrypted. The headers, which contain important routing
information is in plain text. The headers contain your IP address, the
destination IP address, and protocol information. If this was encrypted,
the routers all over the web could not function. This is where IP spoofing
and anonymous schemes come into play in an effort to hide your identity. I
am not sure how effective these schemes are and none are foolproof.
