one thing you might want to try, is to get an indoor/outdoor thermometer,
and place one of the leads at the rear vent, where you hear the fan going.

Once it's there for a few minutes, find out what the temperature is in that
area, and this will let you know how much hot air is escaping from the
computer.

If you find it goes between 85 and 95 degree Fahrenheit, then you're fine,
however, if you find it goes past 95, to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, and stays
there, you might want to get it checked out.

If the fan is hotter than that, and your temperature rises above the stated
maximums, then you should shut down your computer for a while and let it
cool off.

Turn it back on, after about an hour or so, and see how long it takes the
temperature to rise again to that temperature.

If it gets there rather quickly, then you're looking at possibly having a
clogged vent, and you should get it cleaned and aired out immediately to
prevent the computer from overheating.

This is a fairly cheap and inexact way of gauging the temperature of your
computer, but it is the most reliable without looking at the temperature via
the CMOS screen.

Oh, and the most accessible.

Granted, there are programs one can use to check the computer temperature,
but they will cost you money, and, depending on how old your computer is, or
how good it is, you may not want to spend that much money.

I should also say that blowing out your computer every once in a while is a
good practise, especially if you live in an area with lots of dust or pet
dander that may be stuck in the crevices of your desk and floor.

A can of compressed air is your best friend in that situation, and you
should probably take the case off and blow the thing outdoors, where the
dust can fly around without any fear of it staying in the house.

Do not use a shop vacuum, or other household vacuum, as the suction may pull
off chips or something crucial in the operation of the computer.
