Ok. Not sure if it's too relevant nowadays, but as far as I know, at some stage, and only in some cases, they were actually designed to allow the air to circulate through the structure of the casing - almost a type of ergonomic air circulation or something.
This meant that if you left the side of the case off it could sometimes not be a terribly good thing, and, in some cases it might also allow forms of static electricity to come into contact with the internal components whereas the outer housing is normally insulated from the internal components as such. The closest I got to sorting out a similar problem was a while ago when I had a decent processor, but had things like a high performance hard drive, and high-level video card causing some overheating, I in fact got hold of a high performance CPU cooling fan that used to irritate some people since it was somewhat noisier, but apart from that, it did the job right, and interestingly enough, actually had a sort of control knob you then mounted on the front of the box so you could in fact turn its speed up/down your self (within limits related to CPU temperature). Lastly - and this isn't so helpful/useful - some of the old PC LAN- types would in fact implement a form of liquid cooling for their computers where tubes of coolant liquid ran through, inside and around the computer boxes/components, but, obviously, this was never really something that got really promoted as such because it had caused enough problems at times, and also made the box a bit heavier to carry to gaming sessions. Lastly, in the old days when I built/maintained/supported computers we firstly just made sure all the internals of the computer were clean if we had regular overheating, and the two components we replaced first were the CPU's own cooling fan, and sometimes even the power supply unit's fans, but that was normally simpler to just replace the whole power unit. You don't necessarily know if it's just overheating however, but instant restarting is one of the sort of common results thereof.
