Hi Patricia, Do not, under any circumstances keep it standing on one end, not unless it comes with support bases to keep it up in case you bump the desk.
I have heard of drives being totalled when they fall from such a short distance as a tip over. In terms of keeping it plugged in, there should be no problems doing that, if anything, it will keep the heads moving and create less strain on the drive's heads if it doesn't have to keep accessing data from a stand by or parked position. One thing I do recommend is to shut off the drive at the switch located on the drive housing itself, as this will give the drive a chance to spin down, and park the heads before you move it, so no danger of scratching the heads when you move it or lay it down somewhere else to hard. Having said that, you do not need to keep the drive on at all times, and the fact that it is a portable drive means that it's meant to be moved when ever you want to move it, so whether you want to keep it plugged in with the power on or off, will not make any difference. I keep my drive constantly plugged in and turned on, but that's my preference, as it's a pain in the back side to have to unplug it, roll up the wires and move the drive every time I want to move it, so I move it as little as possible. Keep in mind this is because of laziness on my part, and not because of some perceived danger to the drive. Smile.
