Really didn't give it much thought. I occasionally use Start Menu when I want
access to the control panel or other such things. i'll keep what you say in
mind.
Thanks for thetip!

  Doug,

Have you ever tried using the "StartMenu" instead of the "DeskTop?" I have
never used the DeskTop because of the "mess" that you describe! I find the
StartMenu to be very quick and it is customizable.

  Thanks, but....
I tried that alt-l thing you suggested and got that annoying
  "boink" sound.

    Hi,

How about going to arrange icons. Maybe you could even go to my computer,
go into your c drive, press alt l and it should organize your desktop
  stuff
in rows. If you have a real lot of icons on your desktop, try making a
subfolder and putting some of them in there instead of cluttering the
  inbox.

How can I set up my desktop so as I
can read the icons the way normal people read: left to right, top to
    bottom??
As things now stand, when the desktop comes up, jfw tells me i"m on the
    twentieth-something item of thirty-some.
The arrow keys are totally ineffective.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
