Windows Live Messenger is all I use. There are a couple things you have to change when you first install it, but it's simple, and once it's done, you never need to worry about it again. And I'm talking about getting rid of all the tabs between the typing window, and the History window.

It reads the incoming messages, status changes, personal message changes and stuff automatically. The configuration page is not really accessible, and without it, you'll have to do what I used to do (press tab and down arrow to read the last message).
