I had an old work Armada XP laptop once which used to freeze in a similar fashion. The solution was to unplug the power supply, release the battery for 5 seconds , reinsert the battery , replug in and reboot. It is a hassle but probably quicker than allowing the battery to discharge.
Sometimes the only way out of a crash appears to unfortunately remove all power sources. Hope all is ok when it eventually reboots.
