Actually, external drives are pretty inexpensive these days. You can buy a
1 terrabyte desktop external drive for about $90. And I just purchased a
USB-powered 160gb Seagate portable hard drive for $50. And I have seen
desktop external drives for as low as $40. So you really don't have to
spend a lot.

Exactly what do you want to back up? Do you want to back up everything on
your computer or just selected files? If you want to back up your entire
system, you should use your 16gb flash drive instead of DVD's , which can
only hold about 4.5gb of data each. Once you decide what you want to back
up and what media to store it on, you have to choose a program for
performing the backup. But there's a dirty little secret about all these
backup programs that nobody likes to talk about. If your hard drive
suffers
a catastrophic crash and you need to perform a complete system recovery,
you
will need tech-savvy sighted help to get up and running again regardless
of
which program you choose. This is because you won't have any speech to
guide you through the restore process. If there is an easy way to perform
a
complete system restore from an external hard drive or flash drive that
does
not require the use of an inaccessible boot CD, I would sure like to know
about it.

It may be that you have a CD burner but only a DVD read capacity.
Some
older drives did not have a DVD burn capacity.
If you do believe that you have a DVD burner you will need DVD burning
software. There is no DVD Burner included with XP . I would suggest
that
you go to the Jaws User Programs page where there are several free
programs
which will burn DVDS.
