Down sizing a .wav file as a .wav file:

If your version of Windows (we don't know which version you are using
because you did not tell us) came with
Sound Recorder and your .wav file is not too large (we don't know how large
it is because you did not tell us), load the .wav file of interest into
Sound Recorder. If the .wav file is very, very large, this might take some
time during which you might think that your computer has locked up. Be
patient.

Note: Some folks may tell you that Sound Recorder is limited to files of
very short duration. Give it a try and see whether or not they are correct.

If and when the .wav file has loaded into sound recorder, follow these steps:

Open the File menu
Select Save As
Tab to and press the Change button
Tab to and open the Attributes combo box

There, you will be able to up and down arrow through several sets of
attributes from which you can select
attributes that will render a smaller file unless your file already consists
of the smallest attribute combination.

Below is a shortened sample of how the attributes list will probably be
presented.
Attributes: 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo 187 kb/sec
44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo 172 kb/sec
48.000 kHz, 8 Bit, Mono 46 kb/sec
48.000 kHz, 8 Bit, Stereo 93 kb/sec
48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono 93 kb/sec

Choosing attributes with smaller numbers will usually render a smaller .wav
file. However, a smaller .wav file may not have sound quality as good as
the larger file.

After choosing the new attributes, press the appropriate buttons to exit the
dialogue and save the new version of the file. You might want to save the
new version under a different name to prevent overwriting the original file
until you decide if the new file is satisfactory.
