[Blind-Computing] how to uninstall avast free

Does anyone know how to uninstall Avast free?  I have tried through control 
panel but finally it tells me there was an error in uninstalling.  Grrr.  It 
also won't uninstall from the programs page or from the system tray. 
Needless to say, this is preventing my trying a different antivirus.  Thanks
