It might not and there is no way for me to know for sure but consider this 
if you would, does it go away after the last item is removed or not, again 
that is a question I couldn't answer as I use a USB sound card exclusively 
so there is always something connected up on this system.

Yes, that option is available in Windows XP.
I always use it for ejectingg cd's,
and yesterday I tried it with a flash drive, and noticed
that the name of the drive changed to, removeable disk,
but this did not remove the safely remove hardware icon from the system
tray.

No, I am not sure if Eject would perform the Safely remove function.  If
not, it should.  I have Vista Home Premium, perhaps this is not available on
XP?
