NVDA portable works under Windows 7, with the exception that programs
that require higher level access than the standard user account will not
speak. They will however with the installed copy. They will also speak
if you set the notification level of user account control to 0% and
restart your computer. It's this user account control that can force
programs to run at a higher level. But I don't look at this as a
disadvantage as I'm a main JAWS user but use NVDA as a backup.

I am afraid this is not correct. The best that can be achieved on an XP
machine is a start up auto play dialogue box which should have start NVDA
highlighted. Pressing enter though should start NVDA.
Users of Vista will often have problems if Vista attempts to scan the USB
pen. Generally the advice is to use Narrator to try and get around this to
start NVDA from the USB drive.
I have also heard that the NVDA portable start up does not work in Windows 7
but I have no direct experience of this.
If you want a guaranteed startup of NVDA without the need to press any keys
this can be achieved by putting the portable NVDA files and the relevant
autorun.inf on a CD. I have successfully accessed several vista machines
this way . You do not have to do anything, just put the CD in and wait for
NVDA to start. This can take a little while, depending on the speed of the
machine.

Thanks.
What I ment to ask is concerning the portable versions. If I have them on a
flash drive, do I just plug in the flash drive and then it will start
talking? This question is in reference to NVDA?

Pretty similar to JAWS.
You can try it by going to
www.satogo.com
One difference is that you must be connected to the Internet for it to work.
