Hi,

Whenever I use an external USB hard drive that I plug into a port, I usually do a simple lookup or update a file or folder. In that case, I can usually safely remove the hard drive without any problems.

However, when I do a lot of activities like deleting folders or files, adding new folders and files etc., I cannot safely remove the hard drive from the USB port no matter how many times I try.

I found that the only way to do so is to do a restart of my computer and when the system is up , I can always safely remove the hard drive. It appears to me that some software is holding on to that drive and will not release it?

Is there something else that I can do without restarting my computer that can be done more quickly and efficiently?

I am using XP with all the updates and the latest version of Jaws 11.

I appreciate any advice that will make it easier to do maintenance on my external hard drives. By the way, this happens to any external USB hard drive on different USD ports whether it is one always attached but with a power off and on switch and my passport external hard drive with no power switch.

Thanks in advance.

Lennie
