Yes, that is the recommended action before unplugging any USB drive, unless
the caching feature is disabled. I find a faster way to do this is go to
the "Computer" or "My Computer" folder in Windows Explorer. If you are
copying files to the drive, pressing Backspace should eventualy get you
there. Select the USB drive and press the Applications key to simulate a
right click. In the context menu select "Safely remove" and press Enter.
In Windows 7 this seems to be incorporated into the "Eject" menuu item, so
press Enter on this item. This will perform the Safely remove function with
no further interaction. You will hear that it is safe to remove the device.

you don't go through the system tray and that safely remove hardware
thingy that shows up there?
That's how I do it. Just press enter on that and it gives you a list of
the devices to stop, just select the one and press spacebar to stop that
device, then it will tell you it's safe to remove it, then close out that
window.
No need to reboot or shut down the computer.

Dear Friends,
I concur with Cliff, I have 2 external T-Drives, and a thumb drive, and
whenever I disconnect them, I simply shut down my computer.
Sure it takes a couple of minutes, but a small price for having
absolutely no problems for the past couple of years I have been using
external drives!
With Best Regards,

Lennie: My experience is limited, here, but I'll give you my input, for
what it's worth.
It sounds to me as though whenever your hard drive is active, such as
you discribed, removal is impossible, even impractible because it could
result in the loss of unsaved material.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Safely removing USB external hard drive
Hi,
Whenever I use an external USB hard drive that I plug into a port, I
usually do a simple lookup or update a file or folder. In that case, I
can usually safely remove the hard drive without any problems.
However, when I do a lot of activities like deleting folders or files,
adding new folders and files etc., I cannot safely remove the hard
drive from the USB port no matter how many times I try.
I found that the only way to do so is to do a restart of my computer
and when the system is up , I can always safely remove the hard drive.
It appears to me that some software is holding on to that drive and
will not release it?
Is there something else that I can do without restarting my computer
that can be done more quickly and efficiently?
I am using XP with all the updates and the latest version of Jaws 11.
I appreciate any advice that will make it easier to do maintenance on
my external hard drives. By the way, this happens to any external USB
hard drive on different USD ports whether it is one always attached
but with a power off and on switch and my passport external hard drive
with no power switch.
Thanks in advance.
Lennie
