Yeah, I rarely if at all do the safely remove hardware thing; I always
sut down my computer. Would just logging off make the drive safe to
remove as it were?

Probably why the first Windows computer I purchased in 1998 is still
running perfectly, and on the same desk next to my XP machine that is

you don't go through the system tray and that safely remove hardware
thingy that shows up there?
That's how I do it. Just press enter on that and it gives you a list
of the devices to stop, just select the one and press spacebar to stop
that device, then it will tell you it's safe to remove it, then close
out that window.
No need to reboot or shut down the computer.

I concur with Cliff, I have 2 external T-Drives, and a thumb drive,
and whenever I disconnect them, I simply shut down my computer.
Sure it takes a couple of minutes, but a small price for having
absolutely no problems for the past couple of years I have been using
external drives!

Lennie: My experience is limited, here, but I'll give you my input,
for what it's worth.
It sounds to me as though whenever your hard drive is active, such
as you discribed, removal is impossible, even impractible because
it could result in the loss of unsaved material.

Whenever I use an external USB hard drive that I plug into a port,
I usually do a simple lookup or update a file or folder. In that
case, I can usually safely remove the hard drive without any
problems.
However, when I do a lot of activities like deleting folders or
files, adding new folders and files etc., I cannot safely remove
the hard drive from the USB port no matter how many times I try.
I found that the only way to do so is to do a restart of my
computer and when the system is up , I can always safely remove
the hard drive. It appears to me that some software is holding on
to that drive and will not release it?
Is there something else that I can do without restarting my
computer that can be done more quickly and efficiently?
I am using XP with all the updates and the latest version of Jaws 11.
I appreciate any advice that will make it easier to do maintenance
on my external hard drives. By the way, this happens to any
external USB hard drive on different USD ports whether it is one
always attached but with a power off and on switch and my passport
external hard drive with no power switch.
