Hi Ishe;

Thank you so much for these settings.  This confirmed that Outlook Express 
and Outlook use different settings.  Attempting to find out if OE and 
Outlook used different settings was the main goal.  I'll send these settings 
to him to see if they help.  Thanks again, take care.

To cut a long story short:
he/she should use these settings:

First they should make sure that POP/Email forwarding is enabled in their
account on the Gmail account. They can enable this by going online and log
in and make these changes before playing around with Outlook.

In Outlook, they have to select the Gmail account:
Choose "Change" button and tab to the "Servers" page and make the following
changes:
Incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
Incoming port: 995
SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
SMTP Port: 587
