Hi John and all,
VMware Player is absolutely free to use and it is brilliantly
accessible. Previously you could only run virtual machines created with
other VMware products, but as of 3.0 and higher you can create and
manage virtual machines all with the Player software. Also if you have
the XP Mode package instaled you can import the Windows XP Mode virtual
machine directly into Player and you run it just like any other virtual
machine. Please note there is a wizard that you need to complete. This
wizard is inside the virtual machine itself, and therefore is not
accessible with speech. You will need either sighted assistance or take
screenshots and perform OCR so that you can complete the wizard.
Basically you have to accept the XP Mode license agreement, then it
talks about regional and language settings, then it asks for a computer
name and (optionally) a password, then it talks about setting the date
and time. Once you complete the wizard the virtual machine restarts and
you can use Narrator to help you till you get your screen reader
installed. Hope this helps.

Hi John and all, but what FS didn't tell you is that it's only Virtual PC
that they don't support at this time. I use VMware's implementation, where
it directly imports the Windows XP Mode you previously installed and creates
a virtual machine from that. JAWS works very well on both the host and guest
side, and is in fact more responsive than Virtual PC's version. I have it
installed because I have an obligation to have it, but frankly I don't use
it.

It is definitely not available with Windows 7 Home Premium.
In addition, I found out that even with Windows Professional, jaws
does not support virtual machine software which is required to make
Windows XP Mode function.
I received that unfortunate bit of news directly from one of the
Freedom Scientific Technical Support people.
he invited me to test it but he made it perfectly clear that they do
not support this kind of program at this time.
That was good enough for me since I had already paid $95 to upgrade my
Home Premium to Professional.
Oh well, live and learn, I guess.
