I have to agree with Alan here.
Microsoft Security Essentials is actually the first anti-virus app that have
stayed more than one week on my PC.
I've tried a lot of AV apps but most are painfully slow and slows down the
machine.
I'm not going to start a debate on this subject so I'm not giving any names
of AV apps that I find useless.

MSSE is very snappy, has a fairly high detection rate and is very
accessible.

Eset is not freeware.
It is payful.
When you would like, use avira or avast.
They are free virus removers.
They are very good.
