How do you then start VLC?
I think it would be best to open My computer (windows key + E), arrow down
to the DVD, right click on it, and choose something like play with VLC media
player.
There is also a way to select it from within the player itsself, but this is
how I generally do it, including on folder copies of DVDs.

I tried this, but when I arrow down on navigation, I get "empty -
unavailable".
The DVD I have is That 70's show with the 1st 5 or so shows on it. When I
put the DVD in, it does recognize that this is indeed the That's 70's show
DVD. I haven't tried any other DVD's because I don't have any. We just
signed up for Netflix, so this is the 1st DVD we've received.

Menu system activated with alt key, over to navigation menu item, arrow
down to track, right arrow, and then arrow up and down to something like
title1, and hit enter.

I've installed the older, more blind friendly version of VLC. (0.8.6i)
Now, what steps do I take to look at the directory of the files/track on
the DVD, select one and simply start playing that track?
