Hello Rosemarie, I found this off the web but not sure if this will help 
you!  I am not that techical so I am not sure what all of this means woe! 
So anyone with more technical experience, might want to help you if you need 
more help!  Message follows:

"I am running XP Professional with service pack 3 on a dual core with 4
GB of RAM.
I got SVOX Pico to show up in NVDA portable, but I had some trouble
getting it to be available to the installed version of NVDA.I'm writing
this because some others had similar problems.
The ApplicationData file is hidden, I think by default. In order to make
the SVox Pico Synthesizer appear in the NVDA synthesizer dialog list of
available synthesizers,  you must unhide some files and folders that you
need to access.  You should do the following.
Step 1 is to go into the Control Panel and down to the ?Files and
folders? dialog. When you press ENTER, a multipage dialog appears. CTRL
+ Tab to the View Tab. The second control on that Tab is a list of 18
check boxes. The fourth checkbox is  ?Show contents of system files?.If
it is unchecked, check it. The ApplicationData Folder mentioned on this
mailing list will now be visible.  You will want to reverse this change
after you get the Pico Synthesizer to appear in the synthesizer list.
The reason you might want to re-hide the contents of the system folder
is to prevent a visitor from messing up your system. After you save this
change and exit the Control Panel, you need to put the SVox Pico
synthesizer files onto the clipboard.
Next go to the ?Program Files? folder on the C drive. Open the NVDA
folder. Within the NVDA folder, there should be a userconfig folder.
Open it. Within the userconfig folder, navigate to the synthDrivers
folder and open it. It should be empty. Paste the Pico synthesizer files
into it.
Now, back out of the ?Program files? folder, leaving you at the root of
the C drive.
Now, arrow down to the ?Documents and settings? folder and open it.
Select and open the ?All users? folder.Arrow down to the ?Start Menu?
folder and open it.  Next, you will see a list of files and folders.
Open the one that says ?Programs?.  Nesxt open the NVDA folder. You will
find a shortcut called ?Explore user config directory?. Activate that
shortcut.   Voila! You aare now in the ApplicationData folder. Arrow to
the synthDrivers folder and open it. It should be empty. Paste your SVox
Pico files. Press the BackSpace key, until you are back at the root
level of the C drive.
You should now be able to start NVDA and see the SVox Pico Synthesizer
listed above ESpeak.
You can also put the Festival driver files into the same folders you put
the SVox Pico files into. If you do, bothSVox Pico and Festival will
appear above ESpeak in the list of available synthesizers.
Concerning Portable NVDA, there aren?t any hidden folders to worry
about. Simply open the flash drive in question, open the NVDA folder,
open the userconfig folder, and finally open the synthDrivers folder.
Paste SVox Pico synthesizer files, or Festival, or both (obviously a
separate copy and paste would be needed).. SynthDrivers is plural, not
singular. That?s a big, hint.
